Deleting a folder or formatting the wrong drive can feel final, but recovery may still be possible when the underlying data has not been overwritten. The most important action is to stop using the affected device.
Avoid overwriting your files
- Do not install programs or download files to the affected drive.
- Do not copy recovered files back to the same device.
- Do not run CHKDSK on a drive that is failing or contains the only copy.
- Disconnect removable storage until it can be assessed.
Hard drives, SSDs and removable storage
Traditional hard drives, USB sticks and memory cards may retain deleted data until it is overwritten. SSD recovery can be more difficult because TRIM may clear deleted blocks automatically. Formatting type, encryption and later use also affect the result.
Explain exactly what happened
Provide the device type, the action taken, when it occurred and whether the device has been used since. This helps identify the safest next step and avoids unnecessary work.
Discuss your recovery
Stop using the affected device and tell us what happened, which files matter most and whether the device is making unusual noises.
